The Ambarita resort actually lies 2km north of Ambarita town.
Unfortunately, boats have stopped calling at the resort, and now
terminate in the town harbour before returning back to Parapat. Buses
heading north often call in at the harbour to see if there's a ferry
arriving, though you may have to wait a while for one. You could also
try booking your accommodation in advance, as many hotels lay on a free
transfer service from the harbour to the hotel.
Barbara's (tel 0625/41230). The most popular hotel in Ambarita, thanks
to its excellent and well-deserved reputation for friendly service and
comfortable rooms. Under $5.
Kings I and II (tel 0625/41421). Formerly known as Gordon's, Kings I and
II are a long-established and popular pair of inexpensive homestays.
Kings II has some smart Batak bungalows (with hot showers), and is a
more upmarket version of the busier, budget-orientated Kings I, a fairly
nondescript place redeemed by its restaurant which serves some great
vegetarian dishes. Under $5.
Shangri-La . Lying an awkward 6km to the north of the main Ambarita
resort, this excellent homestay is a perfect hideaway from the Tuk Tuk
hordes. The rooms are smart and comfortable, the restaurant serves large
portions, and the owner is very helpful. $5-10.
Thyesza (tel 0625/41443). One of a string of fairly similar-looking
places, with simple neo-Batak bungalows and pricier rooms in the main
building that come with hot water. Under $5.
