CAMPLONG |

One of the nicest places to stay on the island is CAMPLONG , a small
market town and beach resort situated on an attractive river estuary
35km east of Sampang. Here, the appealing Pondok Wisata Camplong (tel
0323/21586; under $10) has nice en-suite bungalows set in pleasant
grounds. There's a good beach, a fair-sized pool, and an inexpensive
restaurant. All public transport between Pamekasan and Bangkalan passes
the entrance.
The capital of Madura and its largest town, PAMEKASAN lies in the middle
of the island, but has little charm and not much to interest visitors.
The main shopping area, Pasar Kampung Arab, is just off Jalan Diponegoro,
west of the alun-alun. The main bus terminal , just east of the town
centre, provides regular direct services to Surabaya, Bandung, Jakarta
and Banyuwangi. The long-distance buses (beyond Surabaya) leave at
around midday, others operating throughout the day. Amongst the town's
limited accommodation , try Hotel Garuda, Jl Masgit 1 (tel 0324/22589;
under $10), on the alun-alun, with very basic rooms.
