The small village of CEMORO LAWANG , 46km from Probolinggo, is
perched on the crater's edge and is the easiest place from which to set
off on the pre-dawn excursion to Gunung Bromo itself. From the crater's
edge in Cemoro Lawang there are brilliant views of the entire area -
best at the end of the road from the north coast and in front of Lava
View Lodge. Minibuses from Probolinggo run up to the crater rim from 6am
to 5.30pm; they do the return journey from 8am till 4pm. Several places
advertise minibus and express-bus tickets, which are more expensive but
more convenient.
There is a national park post on the Probolinggo-Cemoro Lawang road
where you pay admission to the park at Ngadisari (Rp2500). The national
park office (Kantor Taman Nasional Bromo Tengger Semeru; daily
7.30am-4pm) in Cemoro Lawang has displays about the area. Hotel Yoschi
is the best place for local information, especially if you want to trek.
The postal agent at the Hotel Bromo Permai charges a lot, so bring
stamps with you. There's a wartel (daily 3am-10pm) on the left as you
reach the top of the road, and a health centre in Ngadisari, Jl Raya
Bromo 6, just by the checkpost.
