| In the far southeastern corner of Java, the fishing village of
GRAJAGAN has become famous for the world-class surf in Grajagan Bay,
whose awesomely long left-handers, promising endless tubes and walls,
are known as G' LAND . The beach, Pantai Coko, is signed from the
village: it's 300m to the gate (admission Rp1050) and then another 2km
through the forest to the black-sand beach. Due to the surf, take local
advice from the forestry office about safe swimming spots, and never
swim near the rocks. There is accommodation at Wisma Perhutani (no phone;
under $5) in basic rooms (bring your own sheet sleeping bag. To get to
Grajagan, take a minibus from Banyuwangi's Brawijaya terminal to
PURWOHARJO , and then a microlet for the final 14km to Grajagan. To get
to PLENGKUNG , 15 km east across the bay, where a surf camp caters for
surfers from April to October, you can charter boats from Grajagan -
you'll start bargaining at US$200 for a boat for ten people. Book
Plengkung accommodation through PT Wadasari Wisata Surf, Jl Pantai Kuta
8b, Denpasar, Bali (tel 0361/7555588) or Plengkung Indah Wisata, Andika
Plaza Blok A 22/23, Jl Simpang Dutah 38-40, Surabaya (tel 031/5315320).
Several tour operators on Bali and Lombok run all-inclusive surfaris
which feature G' Land in their itineraries. |
