| JIWIKA , 20km northwest of Wamena by regular taksi (1hr; Rp2000),
attracts tourists to its nearby showcase villages and strange blackened
mummies. Jiwika has one losmen, the La'uk Inn ($5-10), a beautifully
kept little place with a charming Javanese manager. About 100m further
up the road from the losmen and on the right-hand side, is a signpost,
pointing up a dirt track to the "momi". In the traditional kampung at
the end of this track, an ancient mummified corpse is kept, its knees
hunched up to its chest and its taut flesh sooty black. The village is a
real tourist trap, and it costs about Rp3000 to bring the mummy outside
or Rp2000 for you to enter the honai and see it inside. Don't believe
the guest book, which shows other guests have paid tens or hundreds of
thousands to see it; they add extra noughts after you leave. |
