MAKALE |

|
|
| |
| MAKALE is a small town studded with churches and administrative
offices set around a large pond and public square. Jalan Merdeka enters
from the south into the square, while Jalan Pong Tiku exits north from
the pond towards Rantepao. Every six days, Makale's large market fires
up after about 9am, drawing people from all over southern Tanah Toraja
to buy pigs, jerry cans of palm wine and other necessities. Long-distance
traffic continues to Rantepao and there's little reason to stop
overnight here, but you can stay at Losmen Litha (under $5) right on the
square on Jalan Pelita (also the agent for buses back south), and better-value
Wisma Bungin (under $5) on Jalan Pong Tiku; up near the mosque, the nasi
campur-oriented Idaman is the cleanest place to eat. Moving on, bemos to
Rantepao and other destinations - including Bittuang, trailhead for the
three-day walk west to Mamasa - leave the square when full between dawn
and dusk. Makale's airport is 5km northwest at Rantetaya, and taxis for
Makale or Rantepao meet flights; Merpati's office is in Rantepao. |
