MAMASA is a spacious village of wooden houses beside Sungai Mamasa,
where electricity and telephones are still very recent arrivals. The
marketplace and most amenities are on Jalan Ahmed Yani, with everything
else scattered around the perimeter of a large football field. A mosque
sits in the shadows between the market and river, but Mamasa is
predominantly Christian, and a white stone church dominates the slope
above town. The twice-weekly market on Thursday and Sunday attracts
people from distant hamlets often dragging their wares - including the
heavy, boldly coloured sambu blankets (Rp70,000-Rp100,000) for which
Mamasa is famed - into town on horseback.
Budget accommodation in Mamasa includes Losmen Toraja Church (under $5),
a nice, bare couple of bungalows down near the river on the northern
side of town; and Losmen Marampan and Guesthouse Mini (both under $5),
offering cosy rooms in old wooden houses near the market on Jalan Ahmed
Yani. Slightly more upmarket, Mantana Lodge (under $5), around the
corner from the market on Jalan Emy Salean, is good value with larger
rooms. They all serve food and can organize horses and guides for the
trail to Tanah Toraja.
