PARAPAT |

Situated at the point where the Trans-Sumatran Highway touches the
eastern shore of Toba, PARAPAT is a town split in two. There's the
rather tawdry resort , crammed with hotels, restaurants, karaoke bars
and souvenir shops and, set on the hills away from the lake, the area
where you'll find the bus station, bank and telephone office. Buses
arriving in Parapat drive through the resort to the ferry terminal
before heading back to the bus station.
Nearly all the hotels in Parapat are geared towards Asian tourists
rather than Westerners, who tend to head straight for the resorts on
Samosir instead. Before leaving though, change money at Bank BNI on
Jalan Sisingamangaraja, and make any necessary international calls from
the Telkom office , on the back road between the bus station and the
quay - both much better value than in the resorts. The best budget
accommodation is the clean and welcoming Charley's, right by the ferry
terminal at Jl Pekan Tiga Raja 7 (tel 0625/41277; $5-10).
