SIBOLGA is the main port for ferries to Gunung Sitoli on Nias. All
buses and bemos call in at the terminus on Jalan Sisingamangaraja, at
the back of the town away from the coast. The port for ferries to Nias -
as well as the occasional Pelni boat from Padang - is about 1.5km south
of here at the end of Jalan Horas. Three companies run ferries to Gunung
Sitoli: Jambo Jet (KM Cucit/Poncan Moale; and Sumber Rezeki. Tickets for
Jambo Jet are available from the counter by the harbour gate (tel
0631/22370); tickets for the two slow ferries should be bought from PT
Simeulue at Jl S Bustami Alamsyah 9 (tel 0631/21497), near the Bank BNI.
The Pelni agent , PT Sarana Bandar Nasional, is near the market by the
bus terminus at Jl Patuan Anggi 39 (tel 0631/22291) and sells tickets
for the fortnightly KM Kambuna and KM Lambelu . At the moment, Gunung
Sitoli is the only place on Nias that passenger boats stop at, though
there are hopes that the direct ferry from Sibolga to Teluk Dalam in
southern Nias will begin sailing again soon.
If you're going to Nias, change money in Sibolga at the BNI bank on Jl
Parman 3 (Mon-Fri 8am-4.15pm). Budget travellers should head to one of
the Chinese-run hotels , such as the friendly and efficient Pasar Baru,
on the junction of Jalan Raja Djunjungan and Jalan Imam Bonjol ($5-10)
or the Indah Sari at Jl Jend A Yani 29 (tel 0631/21208; $5-10), which is
a tad scruffier but still acceptable. The best restaurants are Hebat
Baru at Imam Bonjol 79, and the slightly cheaper Restoran Restu opposite
at no. 58c; both serve excellent Chinese food.
