| SUMENEP in the far east of the island is the most attractive town,
with worthwhile sights and the best choice of accommodation. The
centrepiece of the town is the eighteenth-century Mesjid Agung (also
known as Mesjid Jam'q), a large, cool, white-tiled edifice with
wonderfully carved wooden doors and an attractive interior of rich gold
decoration and blue-and-white Chinese tiles; women should cover arms and
legs, but a scarf isn't necessary. Museum Daerah and the neighbouring
kraton (Mon-Fri 7.30am-5pm, Sat & Sun 8am-4pm; Rp300) are two intriguing
sights, located at Jl Dr Sutomo 8, which leads from the east side of
Taman Adipura Kota Sumenep gardens directly opposite the mosque. The two-part
museum houses an enormous collection of old photographs of the Madurese
royal family, carriages, textiles, furniture and weapons - frustratingly,
there are no labels in English, but museum staff will show you round.
Far better is the kraton , the old palace, which dates from 1762, was
designed by a Chinese architect and is the only remaining palace in East
Java. The Pendopo Agung (Grand Hall) has lovely gold-painted woodcarving,
old lanterns and a cool tiled floor. The wonderfully lively local market,
Pasar Anom , is just north of the bus terminal. |
