Over thirty losmen and hotels, numerous restaurants, bars, bookshops,
travel agents and souvenir stalls stand cheek by jowl on the Tuk Tuk
peninsula. If you plan to stay here, tell the ferryman which hotel you
plan to go to and he'll drop you off on the nearest quay. In general,
the cheapest accommodation is on the northern side of the peninsula. For
entertainment, Brando's Blues Bar has a large selection of CDs, and
Roy's Pub has its own disco and sometimes hosts live bands. Saza's, near
Leo's and Brando's, has a number of decent pool tables.
Bagus Bay Homestay (tel 0625/41481). Clean and basic bungalows set in
large grounds, near the first ferry port, with a pool table, board games,
bar, videos and a twice-weekly Batak dancing display. Variable food.
Under $5.
Carolina's (tel 0625/41520). On the southern tip of the peninsula. One
of the classiest complexes in the area: huge, Batak-style bungalows,
each with a lakeside view and its own little section of beach. $15-20.
Hariara's One of the most charming spots on Tuk Tuk: four spacious,
tasteful en-suite rooms situated in wonderful gardens on the eastern
side of the peninsula, near the Gokhon Library. Ask at the Boruna, 100m
along the road, for the key. Under $5.
Lek Jon's (tel 0625/41578). Budget losmen with 38 plain but pleasant
rooms, located to the south of Hariara's. The staff are a lot of fun -
until, that is, you decide to eat elsewhere. Under $5.
Linda's Long-established travellers' favourite, to the east of Bagus
Bay, with both spartan and more luxurious accommodation. One of the few
places that doesn't mind if you eat elsewhere. Under $5.
Romlan's A few hundred metres north of Carolina's. Hugely popular,
exquisite little guesthouse whose traditional-style bungalows are
probably the best of their kind despite their unfavourable location
behind a rubbish dump. Under $5.
Samosir Cottages (tel 0625/41050). At the northern end of Tuk Tuk. Good
mid-range accommodation, ranging from basic rooms to luxury bungalows
(complete with hot water and a bathtub) overlooking the lake. $5-15.
Tony's Simple, basic but popular losmen on the northwestern side of the
peninsula. Under $5.
