For most visitors, Sabang is just a temporary stop on the way to the
beaches on Weh's northwestern promontory. The most popular of these is
IBIOH , 45 minutes by bemo from Sabang; the service runs three times a
day (10am, 1pm & 6pm, returning at 6am, noon & 4pm). Ibioh is a tiny
fishing village, at the end of which lies the tourist resort (Rp1000 one-off
entry fee), actually little more than a collection of simple tourist
bungalows and restaurants stretched along a forested hillside running
down to the shore. The main attraction here is the excellent snorkelling
- gear can be rented from Stingray's office in Ibioh (Rp2000-5000). The
coral starts just a few metres from Ibioh beach and continues all the
way to Pulau Rubiah, 200m away, a tiny islet that's the focus of a large
nature reserve. Accommodation in Ibioh is mainly in simple A-frame
bungalows and, at the moment, guests have to wash at the well in the
middle of the resort. There are over fifty bungalows in the resort now,
though from June to August it can still be very difficult finding a room.
Try to get one with a mosquito net, as malaria is a problem on Weh. Most
of the bungalows are pretty similar, though Patimah's (under $5) and
Oong's (under $5) are recommended.
The island features two other beaches with accommodation. GAPANG is an
attractive, horseshoe-shaped beach, 2km south of Ibioh, with its own
family of five hawksbill turtles. There is a small selection of
bungalows here, with prices similar to those at Ibioh. In the off season
most of them close down, and those that stay open often turn their
electricity off. The best ($5-10) are owned by the Barracuda Restaurant.
The third beach, LHONG ANGEN , lies on the western side of the island.
It's one of the best, although for six months of the year it completely
disappears - swept away by the sea in November, returning again in May.
The Flamboyan Bungalows (under $5) at the northern end of the beach
provide the best-value accommodation on the island, and Manta Ray
Bungalows (under $5), 500m away, offer healthy competition: contact the
Losmen Irma in Sabang if you wish to stay here.
